So many things are happening...don't know where to begin.
It all started one day, that a new comer to the French desk, Anne Sophie, complained that she's getting bored, been here for 2 weeks, not going out, etc. So I, told her let's go out for drinks or something. To cut a long story short, we met in the evening, took part in a peace candle vigil for the reunification of Cyprus, to which round 20 people contributed, none of which were Cypriot.
Then she said she's meeting a new acquintance at Berlin cafe, a food and drink popular place under a check point at the border.
It turned out the place is reserved for a private party, around 50 people were crammed in the tiny place, around tables and at the bar, many, including us, were standing. A neverending flow of Souvla, huge skewers with grilled meat, dips, salads, grilled wine sausage, etc. was circulating among the merry crowd.
And boooooze...wine, beer, ouzo, whiskey (famous grouse) and mostly Zivaniaaaaa (the spirit from hell, I call it)....was flowing in rivers.
...and lots and lost of cool, interesting people, good looking guys, musicians, media workers, audiovisual people...they all knew each other from one of Nicosia trademark pubs, New Division, an excellent place which has been open since 15-20 years.
After most of them had filled their stomachs, a live band suddenly formed, a clarinette, 2 bouzoukis, a tiny bouzouki (dunno what it's called), a tablah, a guitar...and they all started playing and singing...
Despite the difficulty we foreigners had to follow th rythm of traditional Greek music, Rempetika, live music always infuses a certain punch to an evening, especially that it's mostly orientally enclined melodies.
An hour or so, Basma is sipping on her whiskey (forth or fifth...lost count after a while)...and what does Basma do when Basma's drunk?
she sings.
I go to the circle of musicians, and I don't know any one among the entire lot at Berlin cafe...and I tell them I wanted to sing them a song.
And there was Great silence...
and basma sang
silence...the entire noisy cafe was aghast with surprise
I open my eyes at one moment, and here it comes, cheers, clapping, kisses, bravo Re! woooooo, heeehaaaa, etc
It fucking worked, I pulled this one off...ooofff oooofff offff
Now, eveyone around knows me, I'm Tha Singar!
This is when the fun began for me in Cyprus...and it hasn't stopped since.
...stay tuned for more stories...hehehe
